The Black Jib

The Black Jib… it’s the name I settled on when I started the original blog to talk about my boat ideas. It kinda stuck, so here we are! The original blog is here, but I think I’ll just keep everything on the Robots and Rum site now.

The last great frontier for me in this lifetime is to go sailing at least once, through one rough storm or high seas, just to scare the stupid right out of myself. How do I hope to accomplish this? Simple… go all out, and build a boat.

Contained in these logs is the research, design, calculations, and ultimately the tangible fruit of such a crazy endeavor. Some of what you read may be a repeat from the original journal; I’ll try to keep is as fresh as possible.

I don’t want to drift through an ordinary life doing ordinary things. I don’t want to come to the end and regret things I never had the courage to do. I don’t want to be stuck, chasing someone else’s ideas. I may discover I hate sailing, and maybe I’ll hate the ocean; but what I’m hoping to prove in the process is the truth and wisdom in the words below, as a metaphor for any goal or dream anyone has for themselves.

“To reach a port we must set sail –
Sail, not tie at anchor
Sail, not drift.”
― Franklin D. Roosevelt
